Should, Will, and Can India Pursue a Sustainable Energy Transition?
Monday, November 17, 6:00pm CST
India is the world’s most populous nation, the largest democracy, the fastest-growing major economy, and the third-largest emitter of greenhouse gases. In this talk, Prof. Ranjit Deshmukh will examine India’s critical challenges in meeting its rapidly growing energy demand, ensuring universal energy access, and adapting to climate change, as well as the significant opportunities to address these challenges through the deployment of clean energy technologies.
Ranjit Deshmukh is an Associate Professor in the Environmental Studies program and the Bren School of Environmental Science and Management at the University of California Santa Barbara. He is also a faculty scientist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. At UCSB, he leads the Clean Energy Transformation Lab, is a principal investigator with the Environmental Markets Lab (emLab) and the 2035 Initiative.
Ranjit’s research lies at the intersection of energy, environment, and economics, specifically in low-carbon energy systems, clean energy access, and electricity markets. His interests include understanding strategies, policies, and market mechanisms for environmentally sustainable and socially equitable low carbon energy transitions. He also studies technologies and incentives for increasing access to clean and reliable energy services in developing regions and low-income communities.
Before joining UCSB, Ranjit was a Rosenfeld postdoctoral fellow at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. He holds a PhD in Energy and Resources from the University of California at Berkeley, master’s degrees in Engineering from Humboldt State University and University of Texas at Austin, and a bachelor’s degree from the Government College of Engineering Pune (Poo-nay), India.
